he Dublin Laptop Orchestra returns! The Dublin Laptop Orchestra's very first concert was with the ICC – since then they've taken their unique approach to electronic music performance to festivals and venues across the country, including collaborations with Crash Ensemble and even the National Symphony Orchestra. We're delighted to have them return now to where they started, with brand new pieces, and a collaborative work by the ensemble themselves.

The group was founded while Dan Trueman, Princeton professor of music and co-founder of Plork (the first ever laptop orchestra), was on sabbatical in Dublin. The core emphasis is to bring theatricality and movement to live electronic performance. We use Gametrak controllers (originally designed for an X-box golf game) as effective ways of physically manipulating musical parameters within software. We also use the built-in cameras and accelerometers in the laptops to control different elements of the electronic sound.

The group has een very fortunate to collaborate with some of the finest acoustic musicians in Ireland, including This Is How We Fly, Yurodny, Crash Ensemble and the National Symphony Orchestra.

Described by the Washington Post as 'Ireland's leading classical guitarist' and by Michael Dervan in the Irish Times as 'a trailblazer...when it comes to the guitar and guitar-playing in Ireland', John Feeley studied at Trinity College, Dublin, Queens College of the City University, New York, and The National University of Ireland, Maynooth.

In addition to his solo and chamber music concerts, Feeley has performed widely with orchestra. He has won a number of prizes in international competitions, including the Special Award for interpretation in the 1984 Mauro Giuliani competition, Italy. Concerts have taken him around the world and include appearances at the Sydney Opera House, the Old Opera House, Frankfurt, the L'Arena in Verona, and New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Highly regarded for his performance of new works by Irish composers, he has had many works written for him, which include works by Jerome de Bromhead, Eric Sweeney, Jane O’ Leary, Seóirse Bodley, John Buckley, David Fennessy, John McLachlan and Ciaran Farrell.

He is a regular performer at many international guitar festivals, and he has made recordings with K-Tel, Gael-Linn Records, CBA Classics, Ossiain Records, Castle Communications, a highly acclaimed CD of contemporary Irish music with Blackbox Music, England and has recently released a CD of the music of Irish composer John Buckley with the German company, Celestial Harmonies. He has also recorded with the Chieftains and famous Spanish Soprano Montserrat Caballes.

Multimedia & Electroacoustic Showcase

The Irish Composers' Collective in association with the Contemporary Music Centre present a day of multimedia and electroacoustic art by member composers.

From 1.30 - 5.30pm, the CMC's Library will host a looping screening of a range of audiovisual works and immersive electroacoustic music. With a huge variety of works, from fixed media pieces, to a noise work looping on an ipod, the afternoon will demonstrate the full gamut of the practices of today's young Irish composers.

At 6pm, a live performance will see a selection of the day's works shown in a more formal setting, culminating in live performance from composer Jenn Kirby with dancer/media artist Hiromi Okumura.

Called Feeding Time, the improvised work visualises the concept of time, space and evolution and asks the questions 'what is time feeding us, what are we feeding time?' Taking in dance, projections and live electronics, input from dancer Hiromi's movements will dictate both music and visuals.

The Rite of Spring reimagined for string trio by fourteen of Ireland's best composers to mark 100 years since its notorious premiere. 

Stravinsky's Rite of Spring has become the zero-point from which contemporary music draws its roots. 

100 years on, it still has the power to shock.

Kirkos presents Rite: The Rite of Spring as you've never heard it before. 

Stravinsky's enormous orchestra is pared down to three string instruments: one violin, one viola and a cello.

Kirkos have divided the fourteen sections of the Rite of Spring among fourteen of Ireland's finest composers, a mix of big names and emerging talent, giving them the instruction to do whatever they want with it.

Paul Roe is a musician with particular interests in performance, research, education and participative music making. He has a PhD in Performance Practice from the University of York, a Masters Degree in Community Music from the University of Limerick and is a Fellow of Trinity College, London. He is a performer (clarinet and bass clarinet) of international repute and was Associate Principal Clarinet of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland from 1987-2000. He has been a member of Concorde Contemporary Music Ensemble since 1989 and has given solo, ensemble and orchestral performances throughout Europe, Asia and America.

Paul has performed with many distinguished musicians and ensembles including, Con Tempo String Quartet (Romania/Ireland), Crash Ensemble (Ireland), George Lewis (Trombone-USA), Harry Sparnaay (Bass Clarinet-Holland), Garth Knox (Viola-France), Lenneke Ruiten (Soprano-Holland) and Finghin Collins (Piano-Ireland). He is a member of several chamber music groups, with whom he plays a wide range of music from classical to contemporary repertoire. In recent years he has performed with these groups in Chicago, Atlanta, Vilnius, Paris, Rotterdam, York, London, Barcelona, Ljubljana, Bratislava and Riga. He is a keen advocate for the composition and performance of contemporary music and as a member of Concorde regularly performs new music both nationally and internationally. In 2008 Paul received a Fulbright Scholars award to study Klezmer performance at Mannes College of Music, New York, where he worked with the internationally acclaimed clarinettist David Krakauer.

Paul's career profile in music is broad based with ongoing commitments in performance, teaching, examining and community music. He is a member of the teaching staff at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. He also works in the area of collaborative arts practice for a variety of organizations including Dublin City Council, Music Network, the National Youth Orchestra and the Arts Council of Ireland.

Paul's career is distinguished by an ongoing interest in creative development. He has a variety of performance and education projects developing on a continuous basis with support regularly provided by the Arts Council of Ireland. Paul is Ireland's National Chairperson for the International Clarinet Association for whom he regularly writes music reviews.

Kirkos celebrate their first anniverary with a concert of works by RIAM students and ex-students in the Katherine Brennan Hall.

The concert is named after a well-known mountain.

It will be a night of many firsts: Three composers will be having their first ever public performances, it will be the first time Kirkos have used a singer (the talented and drop-dead gorgeous Richard Shaffrey), and, more importantly, it will also be the first time a teletubby graces the hallowed stage of the KBH.

NODE presents its annual selection of brand-new contemporary compositions by undergraduate composers studying at the Department of Music, Trinity College Dublin. Under the supervision of Dr Evangelia Rigaki of the Music Composition Centre, student performers and composers have been working hard to prepare MOTION/ARREST.

The evening consists of a diverse programme of short works for mixed ensembles, with items ranging from short chamber works to large works for vocalists, electronic instruments and conventional forces.

Kirkos perform a programme of works for visiting composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies

The Irish Composers' Collective returns in 2013 with a six-month solo series, featuring a number of Ireland's top solo performers. We kick off the series with none other than Kate Ellis, cellist, co-director of Crash Ensemble, co-curator of Kaleidoscope, and all round force for contemporary music.

Kate was surrounded by music from an early age. With the radio playing constantly at home, she developed an eclectic taste in music. Since becoming cellist with Crash in 2002, Kate has joined a revolving cast of new music groups for various performances and recordings. With a passion for the unknown, and the chance meeting of various musical minds including Gavin Friday, Karan Casey, and the musicians of Tarab and Yurodny, Kate continues to tour and perform extensively throughout Ireland, Europe, the US and Australia.

Taking a more curatorial approach to her work, Kate is co-artistic director of Crash and co-curator and co-founder of the highly successful 'Kaleidoscope Nigh'. In July 2011 Kate became musician in residence at the Cork opera House working as co-curator of the Reich Effect, a festival marking the 75th year of Pulitzer Prize winner Steve Reich. Kate continues her residency performing and curating her own nights of music in collaboration with musicians other artists all working to expand the confines of their chosen genres. Inspired by these collaborations, Kate has joined forces with six diverse musicians, two visual artists and a poet for a new project RESOUND, presenting original music with live visuals and poetry.
